Values

PAEAN aligns with the Buddhist five core precepts informed by an inner ethic, which the Buddha taught brings “freedom from fear, hostility, and oppression.” The precepts align intention and action with non-harming, generosity, mutual respect, speaking truth, and respect for self, body, and mind.

PAEAN adheres to the Bodhisattva training in wise compassion that understands all beings are resident in one inter-being awareness. While taking care to apply appropriate boundaries to protect from harm, the practice of the Bodhisattva is to refrain from “othering” through aversion, blame, domineering or manipulation for self-gain.

PAEAN is committed to a just transition informed by careful listening that aligns actions respectful of Nature’s sacred web of life and indigenous sovereignty. We are committed to supporting a culture of remediation and reparation informed by and for communities impacted by environmental injustice.

We also follow the 7 Lakota values taught and shared at Standing Rock to inform our activism.

Principles

Inspired by Extinction Rebellion, PAEAN aims to be decentralized while supporting participants and groups to engage in projects and approaches that enable their autonomy. We aim to find a balance between offering guidance while being informed by collective feedback and consensus. We support XR’s call for Citizen Assemblies to decentralize the monopolization of power by corporations, governments, oligarchs, media barons, and authoritarian leaders.
